Substance Abuse Residential Treatment Program

Valle Vista’s professional staff realizes a substance abuse treatment program for adolescents cannot be just a scaled down version of an adult treatment program.

Key Indicators

Adolescents in treatment frequently have more family difficulties and are more likely to have psychological problems. Their alcohol and drug-use patterns are also different. Teens tend to use multiple substances. The “red flags” for adolescents are more subtle and are frequently revealed in school performance, peer relationships, and interactions within family of origin, as well as involvement with the judicial system.

Finally, most addiction programs are not set up to deal with the oppositional behaviors characteristic of adolescent substance abusers.

Valle Vista’s Adolescent Treatment Program not only addresses substance use, but helps an adolescent achieve the developmental stages often missed while using chemicals. Those include:

  • Effective problem solving and social skills needed in order to build self-esteem. Basic trust must be built or rebuilt.
  • Basic feelings identified, and a language of emotional communication must be established.
  • Co-existing mental health issues such as depression, anxiety and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) must be evaluated. Often, substance abuse masks these disorders and they emerge in early recovery. Left untreated, they can become triggers for relapse.

Treatment begins with an assessment of the patient by a multidisciplinary team of clinicians, including a board certified psychiatrist, therapists and nursing staff. With input from the patient and family and information obtained from the assessments, an individualized treatment plan is developed. The treatment goals usually include psychological, behavioral and pharmacologic interventions.

Treatment focus is:

  • Therapy ( individual and group within a cognitive behavioral framework)
  • Abstinence and relapse prevention strategies
  • Education (utilizing the Hazelden Experiential Learning Program)
  • Family involvement to educate about the patient’s illness, how they can support the patient’s recovery after discharge and how to maintain the stability of their own lives
  • On site accredited school
  • Discharge planning and aftercare to ensure that the child’s permanency plan is reached as soon as possible.

Valle Vista Health System strives to provide the highest quality of care in an environment which is safe, respectful, nurturing, supportive, tolerant and positive for all. Valle Vista Health System exists to be a positive life-changing resource to our patients, their families and our community.
