Psychiatric Disorders Residential Treatment Program


Many children and youth experience serious psychiatric disorders. A critical percentage experience problems so severe, disabling, or complex, that they require 24 hour out-of-home placement for treatment.


Key Indicators

Of those children, many may be identified with the following:

  • Demonstrates symptomatology consistent with a DSM-IV diagnosis and can reasonably be expected to respond to therapeutic intervention
  • Self –injurious behavior
  • Inability to function in daily activities
  • Danger or injury to others
  • Experiencing emotional or behavioral problems in the home and/or community and is not sufficiently stable to be treated outside of a highly structured 24-hour therapeutic environment

Residential Treatment Center

Valle Vista Health System’s Residential Treatment Center is a mental health treatment program for children and adolescents, age 6 through 18 with a psychiatric disorder such as but not limited to:

  • Mood disorders
  • Depression
  • Psychoses
  • Disruptive disorders
  • Anxiety disorders
  • Posttraumatic stress disorder

A Critical Component

Valle Vista Health System’s Residential Treatment Program is a level of care in an array of services that children and adolescents with psychiatric disorders need at a particular time given their histories, diagnoses, level of impairment, and living and learning situations. It is a critical component of a system of care that some youth need in order to have the chance to recover and regain their functioning in all life domains. Valle Vista’s therapeutic program offers:

  • 24-hour therapeutically planned mental health interventions including individual, group, family and milieu
  • Medication management by a Board Certified psychiatrist
  • Highly supervised and structured group living and learning environment where individualized therapies are provided
  • Multidisciplinary team of clinically licensed professionals, including psychiatrists, therapists, nurses, activity therapists, and teachers
  • Diagnostic processes which address psychiatric, social and educational needs
  • Individualized assessments, treatment planning, transitional and discharge planning involving the child and family to ensure that the child‘s permanency plan is reached as soon as possible.
