Residential Treatment Program for Severe Behavior Disorders


All children misbehave at times, but behavior disorders go beyond the common acting out and temper tantrums most children experience. With behavior disorder, a child or adolescent has a pattern of hostile, aggressive or disruptive behaviors for more than six months.


Key Indicators

Some problem behaviors may include:

  • Harming or threatening themselves, other people or animals
  • Damaging or destroying property
  • Lying and/or stealing
  • Poor performance in school, truancy
  • Smoking, drinking or drug use at a young age
  • Consistent hostility towards authority figures

Residential Treatment Center

Valle Vista Health System’s Residential Treatment Center is an intensive mental health treatment program for children and adolescents, age 6 through 18 with severe emotional and behavioral disorders who cannot be managed is a less structured environment. Each youth is thoroughly assessed and an individualized treatment plan is designed to assist the child or adolescent develop the behaviors that will enable him/her to return to a home setting as soon as possible.

During the residential stay, highly trained residential staff focus on treating a variety of behavioral and/or emotional problems, such as aggressive behaviors, self –harming behaviors, destructive behaviors, attachment issues, non-compliance, relationship building, social skills, anger control and self-esteem building.

Services provided include:

  • Training in social and daily living skills
  • Behavior modification and cognitive problem solving
  • Therapeutic recreation
  • Community skills
  • Individual, group, and family therapy
  • On site accredited school
  • Transition and discharge planning to ensure that the child’s permanacy plan is reached as soon as possible
  • 24 hour per day Nursing services
  • Medication Management

An interdisciplinary team of highly trained staff work with the residents. Licensed therapists, board certified psychiatrists, registered nurses, certified teaching staff and mental health technicians comprise the clinical team.
